http:../../..www…scarewaves…potband…co…uk/..Travisinterview…html

Thanks for the interview Doc!!!!

———————–

Welcome to the street!!!
Hi, who are we speaking to and how are you on this fine day?
I’m Travis Broyles – professional tattoo artist from Everett, WA. I’m doing great!
How long have you been tattooing?
I have been tattooing professionally for about 4 and a half years. I got my start while I was still in high school, and finished my apprenticeship shortly after graduating. I’ve been tattooing full time ever since.
Where do you tattoo?
I currently work at Sunken Ship Tattoo in Everett, WA. (http://sunkenshiptattoos.com) Its a great shop with a very vintage nautical feel to it. The shop is huge, and we have a vintage clothing store attached to it as well. It’s pretty rad!
What turned you on to tattooing?
For the most part, tattooing just fell into my lap. I’d gotten my first one at the age of 17, and shortly there after, I was learning how to do it. I had figured that since I was not planning on going to college, and had no life long plans – then it would be a good experience for me to get into. Upon learning, I fell in love with the art and everything that goes along with tattooing and the industry.
Do you have a specialist or favorite style?
I’m really into doing American Traditional, Neo Traditional, Black and Grey and anything else with a lot of color. My personal style seems to fancy dark shading, and bright colors.
What are your influences?
Sailor Jerry, Mike Malone, Paul Rogers, Chris Garver, Brandon Bond, Joe Capobianco and etc. All of those tattoo artists not only do amazing work, but they all have or had a huge work ethic. At some point or another, each of those artists were pushing the standards for tattooing – some of which still are. I’m always highly inspired by anyone who works hard, and lets no one get in their way.
Have you tattooed anyone famous?
I have had the honor to tattoo Michale Graves (ex singer of the Misfits and etc) on two separate occasions in 2008. I have also tattooed JV Bastard (Mister Monster, Doomsday Prophecy, Darrow Chemical Co., Michale Graves and etc) multiple times. I’ve also tattooed members of such bands as The Epidemic, The Coffin Caddies, Teen Wolves, The Repomen, Hades Machine, The Greengoes, Church for Sinners and etc. There is a strong relationship with tattooing and music to me, so I love tattooing bands!
Any advice for people wanting to get into tattooing as a job?
Give up the life that you know, and go for it. Find a good tattoo artist that’s work is beyond amazing, and get tattooed by him. Bring your artwork and talk to them. A good apprenticeship will cost, and will last a long time – but its worth it. Tattooing is an amazing job, and there is a lot of money to be made in time. Prepare to bust your ass! Tattooing is definitely not a job in which you can be lazy! Sleep, eat, breath, and live nothing but tattooing – never give up – and you’ll do extremely well.
How else do you spend your spare time?
I run a horror based record label by the name of Robot Monster, Inc. ( http://robotmonster.us) Between tattooing and running the label – there isn’t too much time left in the day! I also do web design, graphic design, screen printing, fine art, and etc. I’ve got a few other business’s that I’m trying to get started, that have been on the back burner for a few years. One of which is an all horror based clothing company, called Phantom Creature Clothing and Apparel. Keep an eye out for that in 2010!
Cheers for chatting to us, any last words?
Thanks for interviewing me! To anyone reading, feel free to check out my website, and any of my companies websites. Below are the links – Thanks again!!!
Most of it is kind of old, and I wasn’t able to get the greatest pictures either, but you get the idea.

There is one new digital painting on there that I completed last night with my Wacom tablet, and Photoshop. (see image to the right)
The painting itself is more or less an ode to one of my favorite tattoo artists, the legendary Sailor Jerry. His ships are some of my favorite pieces of flash that he left us with – so I figured I’d do that to get use to this tablet. So far I’m having a lot of fun with this thing, its just a little hard to get use to! It’s definitely a different type of medium than anything else I have ever used, but its pretty fun. I’ve only done a few other pieces with this thing.

Keep in mind that I am running a gift certificate special through the holidays.
Buy any Gift Certificate for a total of $120 or more, and I’ll throw in a free half an hour of tattoo time. That’s an average of $60 off!
Offer expires Jan. 15th.

Winter has almost begun on this side of the globe. In some parts of the world it’s below freezing and there is snow falling all around. You’re wearing turtlenecks, sweaters and ski masks just to keep warm. The last thing you could possibly think of is getting a tattoo. Right? Wrong!

The Comfort Zone

Actually, this is the best time of year to get a tattoo and I’m going to tell you why. First of all, you and the artist are going to be a lot more comfortable. Although tattoo studios have air conditioning in the summertime, it’s hard to keep them cool in a business where doors are constantly being opened. During the winter the studios are much more temperate and it’s easier for the artist to concentrate when they don’t have to keep wiping beads of sweat from their brow. But that’s only a minor reason why winter is the best time for a tattoo.

Healing & Appearance

Another good reason is to consider the healing. The less exposure your skin gets to the elements, the better off your tattoo will be to heal. Sweat can aggravate a new tattoo and so can the sun. During the winter, your body isn’t exposed to these things as much and tattoos can heal much more quickly without as much chance for infection.

Appearance is certainly a good reason. During the healing process, your tattoo goes through a few “ugly” stages – scabbing, peeling, the works. If you get your tattoo during the colder months, it will be covered up during this healing process and by the time summer rolls around – your artwork will be completely healed and ready to show o

Time Management

Waiting time is another thing to consider. The winter is the slower season for most studios, which means you won’t have to wait behind a bunch of people to get your artwork done. During the busier season you can wait as much as 2-4 hours while the artists are busy with other customers. Artists are not nearly as rushed during this season, and it is easier for them to give you their undivided attention.

Money in Your Pocket

Since this is the holiday season for many, you might be receiving some money from friends and relatives. This is as good a time as ever to put that money toward the tattoo you’ve been wanting but couldn’t afford. Even if you don’t get enough to cover the entire tattoo, it gets you started in the right direction and you have 3 more months to save before winter is over.

Cold Facts

One downside to getting a tattoo in the wintertime is the chance of colds, flu and other viruses. These illnesses can drain your immune system and make it more difficult for your body art to heal. It is important that you take vitamins and keep yourself healthy if you are considering getting a tattoo during this time of year. If you are showing any signs of illness, wait until you are feeling better before you make your appointment. Vitamins that are known to boost your immune system are C and Zinc. Please consult your doctor and see if these vitamins could be helpful to you.

Enjoy the cold of winter and get your artwork done now. When summer comes and you start pulling out your shorts and tank tops, you’ll be all set to show off your new body art!

We are going to continue this tradition every Friday the 13th. I still can’t believe just how many people came out that night. Personally, I tattooed non stop from 10:30am, until past midnight – one after another, after another, and so on.

Just in case you missed this event, I will be posted pictures and videos soon!
